Introduction:
Greetings, fellow wanderers of the world! I am Kristen Kabrin and I am delighted to invite you into the lens-laden chapters of my life—a visual narrative that began with the turn of the pages of National Geographic Magazine.
The Spark:
Picture this: a ten-year-old, wide-eyed adventurer eagerly awaiting the arrival of each month's National Geographic subscription. While the stories within were undoubtedly captivating, it was the enchanting photographs that stole my heart. Wolves, majestic and wild, held me in a photographic embrace, courtesy of the lens of the incredible Jim Brandenburg. His name became a beacon, and his imagery, a portal to worlds I longed to explore. My first apartment walls adorned with his prints, I found solace and inspiration in the visual tales of distant lands and untamed creatures.
Evolution of Passion:
Armed with a small camera, I began documenting my own adventures, capturing moments with the same fervor that danced within the glossy pages of my cherished magazine. The turning point came with the adoption of Tana in 2008, a loyal companion who became the muse for my photographic endeavors. As I ventured into the wilderness with Tana by my side, a deeper desire to share the beauty around me began to take root.
The Photography Club Revelation:
In 2013, seeking to enhance my skills and understanding of the craft, I joined a photography club. Little did I know that this decision would reshape my destiny. Within five years, I bid farewell to my role at the University of Nevada, Reno, and embraced photography as a full-time pursuit. Retirement funds and a sold home paved the way for two cherished Jim Brandenburg prints in my new abode—a testament to the impact his work had on my journey.
Finding My Voice:
As a naturally shy individual, engaging at gallery openings and art shows presented a unique challenge. Yet, in the language of photography, I discovered my voice—a voice that speaks volumes in the silent beauty captured through the lens. Beyond the pixels and prints, photography has become my conduit to nature, a means to inspire others to step into the great outdoors and witness its wonders.
Plugged into Nature's Vibe:
In a world buzzing with constant connectivity, photography has become my escape into the unplugged embrace of nature. The redwoods stand tall, rendering me humble in their shadow. Water, a sculptor of landscapes, carves canyons with patient persistence. Bison grace fields of gold, their grunts and hooves composing a symphony against the earth. Through my lens, I hope to share not just visuals but an invitation to be present in the world's grandeur.
Fun Fact:
As a serendipitous twist of fate, I share a birthday with my photographic muse, Jim Brandenburg. Both born on November 23rd, albeit in different years, our connection transcends the frames of his iconic images.
Join me as we explore the wonders of existence, one photograph at a time. Let's celebrate the beauty that surrounds us and find inspiration in the untamed poetry of the natural world.
Thank you for stepping into my gallery of memories and musings. Let the photographic journey unfold!
This is a wonderful look into an artist journey. It always intrigues me how artist end up artists and each of our journeys is enthralling. Your journey is blessed as is mine my dear. I am privileged to have been brought into your tribe which has been part of the backbone of my journey. We will have many many adventures ahead of us in this search for inspiration, renewal and wisdom. Thank you for sharing!
You are as fantastic a writer as you are a photographer! I, too, loved NG magazine and the photos. Was always interested in photography, but not a passion such as yours. Keep the photos and stories coming.
